9 Out Of 10 Pirates Feel Mentally Healthier

Ahoy Mateys!

I could not be bothered to leave my house today, I had it all planned out. I have all the food I could need in the house, I had no prior engagements that would require me to leave the house, and my legs are tired so I don’t really want to stand anyway.

But what’s a body to do at home all day? Why take up piracy of course! And that’s exactly what I did. Not the boring kind where I “illegally” download films and music. No, the exciting kind where I pillage every ship and ransack every town in sight. And if along the way I happened to dance with a few governors daughters who paused their swooning to give me a gift that’d be grand.

Yeah, I’ve been playing on my video games again. I’m pretty sure I was supposed to be looking for some long lost sister or something but who cares about her when there’s treasure to be stolen and Dutch titles to be gained? I am now a proud Dutch admiral because apparently as long as you get the right letter from the right person piracy is actually just privateering and perfectly okay.

All this piracy got me to thinking. Dangerous territory but I thought nonetheless. I really like reaching those achievements, getting given a new title or being important enough to dance with the beautiful daughters and not just the “attractive” ones. And video games always provide you with that sense of achievement, it’s a fast paced life, cut out the boring bits where I’m sleeping and get straight to the success. Pirates live a life of excitement (at least they do in video games) they must be mentally healthy. Probably 9 out of 10 of them would agree they are mentally healthier for their career choice.

This kind of hobby, that really emphasises the fast progression of success, is probably not a lot of help for my depression. It makes me more disappointed with the speed at which I achieve my real life goals. I don’t really want to give up gaming so maybe I should make my real life achievements a bit smaller and easier to achieve. Oooh better yet, maybe I should get myself gold stars to award myself with for getting out of bed.

…or maybe it should be gold doubloons as a reward. YAARRGGHH!!

Made me laugh reading this post. :’) Also a coughing spree and nearly choking due to sickness but that is ok, was worth it. Just somehow had a nice feeling to it the post did. 🙂 I really applaud your idea with making your real life achievements smaller.. As it is real life you need to look at it differently. 🙂 I hope you can actually make some kind of system like that. It really helped with my mental health. I was a lover of those game achievements too.. 😛
