Mental Road Sign

‘Tiredness can kill Take a break’

That’s a road sign I’ve seen while driving on the motorway in England. I don’t think any government official ever intended to be quite as mental health aware as this road sign could be.

But when you are struggling mentally tiredness is a killer. Not literally (I suppose it could be literally but I mean metaphorically). If you think of your brain as a competitor in a marathon, and your goal is to run that marathon (otherwise known as making it through another day without quietly sobbing in the corner) you don’t start the race on empty, you get a good nights sleep.

But I willfully disrupt any semblance of a sleeping pattern I may have on a whim. I have not had enough sleep and here I sit hiding in a warehouse, pretending I’m working. I really, really don’t want to be here right now. I want to be hiding under my blanket, where it’s warm and cosy and I’m allowed to close my eyes for longer than a blink.

I am an idiot. I should place more importance on my sleep. I know that, but you can be damn sure I’m going to be back at work on Friday behind on my sleep again… But while my boss may not appreciate it I am taking government advice and taking a break.

And you can probably guess this post isn’t about to suddenly get more exciting because I’m too tired to try any harder. Sorry folks “that’s all she wrote.” My homage to Murder, She Wrote, not an accidental confession of my gender while tired.

      1. The task of every employee everywhere. When I did IT at school I made a macro program that played sequencial screenshots that looked like I was doing work whether I pressed any buttons or not. Got caught out when I went to the bathroom and my computer still looked like it was solving the worlds problems.

      2. So nearly an excellent plan. Schools just crush dreams and ingenuity.
I was once told off for selling sweets at school. Yeah I significantly marked up the price but if the customer is willing to pay am I really to blame? They should have encouraged me for my entrepreneurial spirit.

  1. You’re not an idiot. That’s the depression talking, and if your depression’s voice is similar to mine, it rammers all night long. Sleep-schmeep. I’m a big fan of naps. And caffeine.

For what it’s worth, I’ve been feeling the same overwhelmed, exhausted can’t-fucking-do-it’s for awhile too. Maybe its something in the air.

      1. I am pretty good at polishing off the odd energy drink. But you have to be careful about what you are eating and drinking when you work in a supermarket to avoid getting falsely accused of theft :p

Love that sign! I know so well how it is with the sleeping rhythm.. I am making progress but I still quite often fail. Glad you are taking break there in the past of 15th day! 🙂 Hope you get some now too.
